Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease, whose etiological agent is Mycobacterium leprae, transmitted through droplets of saliva eliminated when speaking, coughing and sneezing.

Objective: The article in question aims to identify the factors associated with the incidence of abandonment of leprosy treatment in the State of Mato Grosso. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was used, analyzing data provided by the DATASUS database, in the period 2011-2021.

Results: Over a 10-year period, the disease showed a high incidence in the age group from 15 to 59 years old, in both sexes. The main reasons for this were: alcohol intake, socioeconomic conditions, forgetfulness, non-acceptance of the disease and mainly the patient's mental health.

Conclusion: The profile obtained highlighted the importance of full adherence to treatment, in order to interrupt the chain of transmission and avoid possible complications.
